Parliament Announces Investigation to Validate Digital Britain Report
As the dust is settling over Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report, Parliament has announced the setting up of a committee to investigate several issues related to broadband including claims by internet service providers across the
Apart from this, the committee is also expected to go in to the viability of levies on copper lines to fund network expansion and whether the target of 2Mbps universal connectivity by 2012 is achievable. However, the issue of upload speeds has been given a miss.
The Digital Britain report had come in for some very heavy criticism from both MPs and telecom companies as being too vague, unrealistic and unviable in terms of the recommendations put forward. The inquiry has been ostensibly set up to give the final verdict on whether recommendations from the report can be implemented in order to derive maximum benefits from the digital revolution, according to the official announcement on www.parliament.uk
The findings of the committee however are not expected anytime soon, with the committee gathering evidence till the last week of September on all matters related to broadband provisions. Most industry players will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigation to see how the future of broadband
